I’m a pack rat. I actually think I have hoarding tendencies – I fight them regularly, and do much better than my mother. As for my grandmother, well, she was definitely a bit of a hoarder. Not your full blown TV one, but she lived through the Depression, and she was poor. So she never threw anything out that might be useful “someday”.
That said, I do try to stay on top of our stuff, but the introduction of a roommate into our home has proven to me that I’ve let “stuff” sit around for too long. I have stuff in my garage I’ve been wanting to sell, but taking pictures and putting them on Kijiji just seems to be too much work (a bed frame, now very dusty; a bike my son out grew, some bathroom fixtures, a vacuum cleaner, and more). I have books, and clothes, and junk.
I tell myself I don’t have enough for a garage sale, but you know what? I have to do something with it all! I hate the thought of tossing/donating it all, I know some of it must be worth something. (I also have DVDs, etc that might be worth something but again, it just seems like so much work!). I have leftover textbooks from university (why? why? I never read them again… although the recruiting one might come in handy now.
). And due to a big upcoming purchase we could use the cash. So I’m thinking…. we might as well have a garage sale. Sigh. I have some work to do to get ready.
Going through closets… are clothes even worth anything?
Sorting out bookshelves with fiction, textbooks, and cookbooks (hopefully the texts and cookbooks will be worth something).
Actually, in looking over everything we have, a garage sale is just the ticket. If we can generate over $100 I’ll consider it time well spent; anything more than that would be a big bonus. The first, best Saturday is the 7th of September, now I just need to prepare. If the weather cooperates we should be OK, and frankly, just getting all the junk sorted and out of my house will be a win!

I sometimes think we should have a garage sale but I never get around to it. Maybe that will be something I look into as well. Right now, I just take what we don’t want and donate it to the Salvation Army or library (books). Though I do try to get some money on the books by selling them to the local book store first.
I hate the hassle, but I have some big items that I can’t really donate, and Kijiji has been a pain too so… if I can get rid of most of my stuff in one weekend, it’s a big win.
What I was thinking of doing was combining my stuff with a friend or neighbor’s stuff. That way it looks pretty good from a buying perspective, and you get to share duties with someone else.
That’s a great idea! I should talk to my neighbours and see if they’re interested.
